Whenever I finish a project, I always seem to end up with leftover building materials…and I really don’t like throwing them away. When I was prepping our primary closet for tile with cement board, I had a few random pieces that were too small to reuse for tile, but I also couldn’t bring myself to toss them.
So instead, I turned them into something useful…a simple little cement candle holder! It’s modern, minimal, and cost me nothing to make since I already had everything on hand.

Sometimes the best projects come from scraps!

Cut the Cement Board Into Squares
I started by cutting the cement board scraps into small square pieces. To get cleaner cut edges, I used my oscillating multi-tool, but any cement board-safe cutting method works.

I cut four matching squares…three for the base and one for the top.
For the top piece, I measured the center and used a hole saw to cut out a circle where the candle would sit.

Glue the Layers Together
Once everything was cut, I stacked the four pieces of cement board and glued them together with construction adhesive.

Cement board is naturally sturdy, so once the layers were secured, I ended up with a solid, weighty base…exactly what you want for a candle holder!
I let everything dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Add Mortar + Mesh Tape
I had leftover mortar from prepping the closet, so I used that to coat the outside of the candle holder. During the first coat, I wrapped mesh tape around the edges to help smooth everything out and give it smoother look.

After the first layer dried, I added a second coat of mortar.
Before the second coat fully dried, I used a damp sponge to soften the corners and smooth the surface. This gives the finished piece a more organic, stone-like look.

Sand + Seal
Once the mortar was completely dry, I lightly sanded the entire piece to remove any rough texture.

I cleaned off any dust from sanding and sealed it with polycrylic. This helps protect the surface and gives it a nice smooth finish.
The Finished Candle Holder
That’s it! Those leftover cement board scraps turned into a modern little candle holder that makes the sweetest handmade gift!

It’s simple, minimal and slightly imperfect (in the best way). The fact that it was made from leftover material makes me love it even more.
So next time you finish a tile project and have cement board scraps left over, maybe set a few aside. You never know what they might become!
Why I Love Projects Like This
I’m always looking for ways to reuse materials instead of tossing them. Little projects like this are such a good reminder that leftover scraps don’t have to feel like waste…sometimes they’re just an opportunity to get creative.

Even small, simple pieces can become something beautiful and useful!
