DIY Cedar Plant Stand: A Simple Weekend Project for Your Patio

After what feels like weeks of packing, moving, unpacking, and organizing, I hit a wall. I needed to build something. Not just assemble furniture or hang things on walls, but actually build something with my tools and my hands! So I decided it was time for a little weekend project – a DIY plant stand!

Step 1: Rip

For this project, I decided to use cedar fence pickets and cedar 2×4’s! To get started, I took my cedar 2x4s and ripped them in half lengthwise using my table saw. These thinner boards will make up the frame of the plant stand.

Step 2: Cut

Next, I cut all of the frame pieces and shelves to length on my miter saw. I’ll be honest, I always get a little nervous using my power tools after a break. If you’re nervous about power tools, you aren’t alone! I just make sure to do everything I can to stay safe.

Step 3: Sand

Before assembling, I gave all of the pieces a quick sand using my orbital sander and 220-grit sandpaper. I’ve found it’s so much easier to sand everything before assembly. This saves time and helps everything go together smoothly.

Step 4: Assembly

With all of my pieces cut and sanded, it was time to assemble. I kept it super simple, just wood glue and a few exterior screws to hold everything together. Easy!

Once both side frames were assembled, I secured them together using two horizontal support pieces, again using wood glue and screws. Then I stood the whole frame upright and added the shelves. I attached each shelf using wood glue and brad nails to keep everything neat and secure.

Step 6: Pot the Plants!

With the stand built, it was time for the fun part…potting my herbs! Normally I make a huge mess when potting plants, but not this time. I filled a large plastic bin with potting soil and set a cookie cooling rack over the top. You could use old wire shelving or any kind of wire rack. It made the perfect little potting station right over the bin to catch all the loose soil.

This plant stand is exactly what the space needed. The herbs are safe from harsh weather and bugs, and the setup adds so much warmth and life to the patio. It really helped create the cozy, welcoming vibe I was going for!
