I’m so excited to share that my son’s bedroom makeover is finally complete! What started as a simple request for a lofted bed turned into a full-fledged room transformation. Let me take you through the steps I took to turn his space into something special.

Removing the Popcorn Ceiling
The first major task I tackled in this bedroom makeover was removing the popcorn ceiling. After having it tested for asbestos (safety first!), I was ready to move forward with this project. I’m so glad I did—it completely updated the look of the room and made it feel fresh and clean.
Skim Coating the Walls
After the ceilings were popcorn-free, I skim coated the walls and the ceiling. Skim coating walls on your own is a cheaper option than hiring out the job to a contractor. With just a few supplies and a couple days you too can tackle this easy DIY to achieve a smooth wall. If you want to skim coat the surfaces in your home, you can learn how here in this blog post!
Painting the Room with Rainwashed by Sherwin Williams
Once the ceiling was taken care of, I moved on to painting. I decided to color drench the entire room with Sherwin Williams’ Rainwashed—a beautiful soft blue-green. The color gives the room a calming and airy vibe, making it feel spacious and serene. It’s one of those colors that changes in different lighting, adding depth and interest to the room.

Building a Lofted Queen-Sized Bed
Next up for this bedroom makeover was the lofted bed. My son wanted more space to play and hang out, so I built a queen-sized lofted bed with a cozy hangout area underneath. It’s a perfect spot for reading, lounging, or just hanging out with friends. You can check out the entire process of how I built this bed in my blog post here!
Custom Adjustable Bookcase
I’d seen adjustable bookcases around and thought, “Why not build one myself?” I wanted to give my son a piece of furniture that would grow with him. This custom bookcase allows him to adjust the shelves, so he can decide what he wants to display or store. It’s a great way to keep the room flexible and organized. You can see how I made it step-by-step in this blog post here!

Closet Makeover with the IKEA PAX System
Finally, I took on the closet. The original closet was underutilized and felt like wasted space, so I revamped it using the IKEA PAX system. Not only did I add some wood veneer and trim detailing to the doors, but I also created an arch feature that adds a unique design element to the space. It’s amazing how much of a difference this made in terms of both function and aesthetics. To see the full closet makeover, check out the blog post here!

I’m so thrilled with how my son’s bedroom makeover turned out! From the lofted bed to the custom bookcase and closet makeover, it’s a space that suits him much better. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it, and I’m so happy to see him enjoying his new room.
