Add a Base Trim
This stem isn’t necessary, but it definitely adds an elevated look to the canvas! Start by adding a thin trim around the canvas to give the actual frame something to attach to while also spacing it out from the canvas. I used screen molding and painted it black. It’s easy to attach – just secure it to the canvas with brad nails!
Making the Canvas Frame
Now for the fun part—building the frame! I used 1×2 pine boards to trim the canvas. For a nice, seamless look, miter the corners of the frame. This can be cut with either a miter saw or a hand saw.
Pine is lightweight and easy to work with, but if you’re looking for a more high-end finish, oak boards are a great option (just keep in mind they’re a bit heavier).
Add the Finishing Touches
Fill in any nail holes with wood filler and lightly sand it smooth. Finish your frame with your choice of paint or stain. This is where you can really get creative and match the frame to your home decor!
And that’s it! You’ve just created a beautiful framed canvas all on your own. Let me know if you give this project a try—I’d love to see how yours turns out! 😊
