In all the years that I have been DIY-ing I have done my fair share of accent walls. Still to this day, an accent wall is one of my favorite projects. They make such a statement in a room and most of the time you can do accent walls pretty cheap.

Listed below are my top 10 accent walls that I have done over the years. If you want to learn more about a particular project just click on the listed project and it will lead you to a more in depth post all about that accent wall!

1. Wood Slat Wall

Ever since the first time I saw a wood slat wall, I couldn’t wait to add one to our home! I found a way to achieve this look but on a budget. By using 3/4″ plywood and ripping it down to 1″ strips I saved so much money on this project! You can read more about the wood slat wall in my tutorial and I even have a FAQ post on the most asked questions!

2. Modern Board And Batten Wall

Modern Board and batten wall.

This accent wall is so bittersweet to me, I built this modern board and batten accent wall in my last baby’s nursery! Once I knew we were about to have our last baby boy, I knew I wanted to makeover a nursery room for him. I chose to construct this accent wall with hand painted “wallpaper” above it.

If you are looking for a board and batten tutorial and a stenciled accent wall above it, I got you covered!

3. Modern Picture Frame Moulding With Plywood

Picture moulding has become quite popular in the last couple years and I love the simplicity of it! When installing it in our home I wanted to do it a different way and go the budget route. I was able to rip down plywood and transform this whole space for a quarter of the price of traditional trim. You can read the full tutorial HERE!

4. Traditional Shiplap

Traditional shiplap in a mudroom.

Some might say shiplap is out, but to be honest, it will always be a timeless and classic look! I think shiplap, whether it’s vertical or horizontal, is here to stay. In this mudroom makeover I shiplapped the whole room and I couldn’t imagine it any other way.

That’s not the only area I have shiplapped either! You can see it in my half bathroom makeover, DIY shiplap built-ins, and master bedroom makeover!

5. Vertical Shiplap

Vertical Shiplap in a bathroom painted green.

In our current home, I did a quick makeover on our guest bathroom and used vertical shiplap to give the space a more custom feel. While painting, I decided to paint the ceiling and I’m so glad I did. Adding the shiplap with paneling is the easiest and cheapest way to achieve this look. I go more into detail in my bathroom makeover post.

Another great project where I added vertical shiplap was one of my boy’s room makeover! Vertical shiplap all over the walls with a dark moody shiplap ceiling was just what this room needed!

6. Modern Accent Wall

In our guest bedroom, I crafted a powerful yet uncomplicated accent wall using a modern design. Utilizing a few MDF 1×2’s strategically spaced, I achieved a distinctive aesthetic. This goes to show that an accent wall doesn’t need to be extravagant or intricate. By incorporating wood to introduce dimension and interest, you can effortlessly create a stylish accent wall!

7. Simple Board And Batten

Everyone needs a good board and batten wall! This is a really great beginner accent wall project. It’s inexpensive and it gets you in the door with DIY. There are so many ways you can add character to a board and batten wall with additional trim or you can go simple like I did our entryway.

8. Custom Built-In Closet Wall

Adding a whole wall of closet space is another great way to add an accent wall to a room. In another one of my son’s rooms, I built this custom slatted wood wall that just happens to be an IKEA closet! Crazy right?! I love how the wall brings character to the space but is yet very functional.

9. Picture Frame Moulding

As you can see I had added picture frame moulding to different areas of our last home. This accent wall was a little different than the plywood picture frame moulding, there was more detail to this particular accent wall. You can read all about this transformation HERE!

10. Shiplap Plate Rack

My plate rack could easily go under the vertical shiplap category. But, I think it deserves it’s own spot on this list! My shiplap plate rack was one of my most popular projects in our last house and for a good reason.

This plate rack can be built anywhere! Kitchen, playroom, living room, basement, even a hallway. Adding a plate rack to your space is a great statement piece but better yet it’s also functional. I share the step-by-step process in my article How to make a diy shiplap plate rack so you too can add one to your space.
